What Is Clay?

Clay is made from mineral-rich soils, and it offers a range of properties for various applications. Clay’s most notable characteristic is its plasticity when wet. When dried or fired, clay offers excellent hardness as a type of gravel. Composition varies based on the clay’s source, but it may contain minerals like illite and kaolinite, which contribute to the texture and workability. These characteristics make clay  extremely versatile for a wide range of applications.

Clay Sizing

Clay particles range in size from 0.05mm to 2mm. These small particles give clay  some of its key features:

  • Strength: Clay particles stick together and create a solid, dense surface when thoroughly compacted. As a result of this process, clay is incredibly strong.
  • Absorption: Even when compacted, clay will absorb water and expand to prevent gaps in the surface. This process prevents leakage.
  • Adaptability: In wet conditions, clay absorbs water to make surfaces built on top more adaptable to the environment.

Clay products from York Building Products meet various USCS Class specifications, depending upon the source plant. Please contact your YBP representative to discuss your project specification needs to better determine which clay source to use.

Uses for Clay

Clay density and weight make it excellent for:

  • Lining ponds: Clay offers a fine texture that compacts tightly and mitigates cracks and erosion that are common in areas with flowing water. Clay as a pond lining is an excellent way to prevent leakage.
  • Lining and capping landfills: As with a pond lining, densely compacted clay is ideal for containing fluid flow in landfills. Clay can absorb water and expand to fill in cracks. This protection is necessary to prevent harmful contaminants from leaching into the soil.
  • Road bases: Clay offers excellent compaction, making it ideal for road bases. Additionally, clay holds moisture well, improving stability in wet conditions and reducing the need for maintenance work like grading and re-sheeting. Clay is also commonly used for driveways, parking lots and other paved areas.
