Manufactured Sand

A crushed stone sand that can be used in a variety of applications, such as asphalt production.

A sand that can be used in the production of ready-mix concrete or asphalt. High-quality concrete relies on sand for extra strength and durability, making it crucial to successful construction projects. Following water, sand is the natural resource with the highest consumption. Embracing the use of manufactured sand in concrete is a viable solution to help preserve our natural resources.

What Is Manufactured Sand?

Our manufactured sand comes from crushed rock — primarily granite — and the byproducts generated in dry crushing. The material is also sometimes called m-sand or man sand.

Advantages of manufactured sand for concrete projects include:

  • Eco-friendliness: Because of its sustainability, the material is kinder to the environment than dredging.
  • Cost-effectiveness: Manufactured sand prices tend to be more economical than those of river or mined sand.
  • Controlled quality: Quality is consistent, while gradation and shape are slightly better than natural sand.
  • High availability: The material is readily available.
  • Good compatibility: Manufactured sand can be used as an aggregate on its own or as part of a blend with natural sand.
  • Improved properties: Manufactured sand has lower permeability, higher resistance to abrasion and more flexural strength.

Manufactured Sand Size

Grain sizes for manufactured sand in concrete projects typically range between 0.15 millimeters and 4.75 millimeters, classifying it as a fine aggregate. Many construction professionals prefer the 0.60-millimeter grain size for suitable workability and strength. It’s best to review the project specs to determine the exact size a job requires.

Uses for Manufactured Sand

As a highly versatile aggregate, manufactured sand is valuable for common construction applications like:

  • Ready-mix concrete: Many construction projects call for large volumes of concrete produced to exacting quality and safety standards. Manufactured sand is ideal for the process given it offers consistent quality, gradation and shape.
  • Screed: This mix is essential for projects calling for acoustic and thermal concrete insulation or finished concrete flooring. Since manufactured sand is available in very fine grain sizes, it’s a viable choice for screed mixes.

Additional Manufactured Sands

Manufactured sands from crushed rock are available for additional applications beyond concrete production. These include:
