AASHTO #3 Stone

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) classifies these bulky stones as AASHTO #3. It is a versatile aggregate that can be used in multiple applications.

What Is #3 Crushed Stone?

This material is a clean stone and easy to handle. AASHTO #3 is known for its high durability and can withstand wear and tear in high-traffic areas. The AASHTO #3 gradation is ideal for drainage and as a filler material. The angular shape created by the crushers allows the crushed stone to lock together when compacted, giving it high levels of stability.

AASHTO #3 Stone Size

AASHTO #3 stone size is relatively large at about 2 inches in diameter with a 3 inch topsize. Larger stones are usually designed to balance strength and drainage capabilities.

Uses for AASHTO #3 Aggregate

The three main areas that AASHTO #3 aggregate uses are drainage, foundations and landscaping with erosion control. The stone’s size and gradation make it ideal for French drains, septic drain fields and as a base layer for drainage. It is also used as a foundation later to give robust support and manage water runoff. Because of this stone’s larger size, landscape designers also like to use #3 aggregate for decorative purposes and erosion control.

You often find that AASHTO #3 aggregate is layered with other sizes of crushed stone to achieve the desired compaction and drainage needed. When used as a foundation, AASHTO #3 is often a filler, as it helps prevent shifting or settling. Here are some other possible applications:

  • A base for a driveway with screening
  • French drains
  • Septic field beds
  • Retaining walls
  • Lining for a stormwater diversion pit
  • Tire scrubbers
  • Haul surfaces
  • A road base
