Solution to Limited Distance for Excavation

When you need a retaining wall in a cut situation but have limited distance for excavation, do not rule out segmental block. By using stabilized aggregate (a.k.a. no-fines concrete or permeable concrete), the system depth can be significantly reduced to about 40% of the wall height vs. about 75% for geogrid reinforcing. The stabilized aggregate material is ready-mix concrete without sand (just Portland cement and gravel), so it both increases the mass to allow the wall to be a gravity structure and also provides drainage. There is no geogrid or stone required, just block and ready-mix concrete. This technology is being used more widely as sites become increasingly constrained and walls are against property lines. It is also a great solution when there are obstacles behind a wall such as an existing wall, rock or utilities.
